At Scene & Heard we pride ourselves on our high production values and the expertise of our production team.
The original style for costumes comes from the vision of founder Kate Coleman. The costumes are ambitious and elaborate, incorporating wit, charm and some serious expertise. Regular designers are Julia Bunce, Lizzie Bardwell and Helen Coyston.
Theatre critic Michael Coveney wrote, after seeing our Replay show in March 2013: ” [the] costumes, made by Lizzie Bardwell and Julia Bunce, [are] as remarkable and inventive as anything you will see on the West End stage this or any other week.”
Julia Bunce – Costume Designer
After completing a Theatre Design course at Croydon College in 1992, Julia was appointed Head of Props at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry. In 1997 she became senior prop maker for the BBC TV series Tweenies, where she later took on the role of Art Director.
Since 2001 Julia has been working as a freelance designer and maker, working on several productions including ITV’s Jimjam and Sunny, Fun Song Factory and recently as Set and Costume Designer for the West End show Morecambe by Tim Whitnall. Obviously her favourite company to work for is Scene & Heard, for which she has been the designer and maker on many projects, sometimes working with the lovely Lizzie Bardwell. She has three children and lives in St Albans.
Lizzie Bardwell – Costume Designer
Lizzie studied Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University. After graduating in 2004 she specialised in theatre for children, designing and realising shows with Polka Theatre, Snap, Bigfoot and ENO Baylis, the education department of the English National Opera.
Since 2007 Lizzie has also worked in TV, prop making for the Children’s show Jimjam and Sunny, where she met fellow Scene and Heard Designer Julia Bunce. Since then she has taken on a variety of roles across the art department, prop making, set dressing and art directing on a wide range of shows, including Gigglebiz, Hounded, Something Special, Cranford, EastEnders and Live at the Electric. Lizzie also works as a buyer for commercials.
Lizzie first worked for Scene & Heard in 2002, when she began assisting co-founder Kate Coleman with costume making. She’s very proud to still be a part of such an amazing company.
Helen Coyston – Costume Designer
Helen trained at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama where she regularly works as a designer and visiting tutor. Recent projects include indoor and outdoor theatre designs for Watford Palace Theatre, Latitude Festival, the National Youth Theatre and the Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

Our skilled technicians rig lights and sound and operate our shows despite very limited resources, and often challenging circumstances. Simon Grover creates the sound effects for each show. The roll call of technicians includes: Dan Hale, Andy Whyment and Aaron Dootson.
Aaron Dootson – Technical Support

Founder Kate Coleman created the unique style of two-dimensional props that characterise our productions.
Each prop is meticulously drawn and coloured by one of an army of dedicated volunteers.
So many people have contributed over the years, but regular prop-making volunteers have included: Giles Taylor, Neil Edmond, Charlotte Weston, Emma Pallant, Becky Wright, Susie Trayling, Jill Riddiford, Anna Groom, Ian Bass and Member Playwright Anastasia Browne.
We are indebted to our volunteer composers who create the music to accompany lyrics written by the child playwrights. Over the years these composers have included: Alice Barclay, Neil Carter, Gervase Cooke, Carlton Edwards, Chris Hoban, Michael Jarvis, Lizzie Lewenden, Sally Mais, Andrew Mallen, Simon McCorry, Ben O’Sullivan, Ronnie Paris, Richard Pitt, Gareth Prosser, Richard Thomas, Rebecca Thorn, David Schweitzer and Jane Watkins.
For our tenth anniversary Celebration of the Imagination, volunteer Simon Grover wrote the lyrics to the Scene & Heard song encompassing all the show titles to date, set to music by Rebecca Thorn and Ronnie Paris.
As part of our fifteenth birthday celebrations in 2014, we produced Come on Down to Somers Town – The Songs of Scene & Heard, a CD of original songs from our shows. With lyrics by our Member Playwrights, it features sixteen songs composed variously by Ben O’Sullivan, Ronnie Paris, Rebecca Thorn and Jane Watkins, all sung by Scene & Heard volunteers.
