Scene & Heard was founded by two charismatic, dynamic women: Sophie Boyack and Kate Coleman had a vision for the children of Somers Town and the determination to make it happen. Sophie & Kate first met as undergraduates at London University and, inspired by Kate’s work with New York’s 52nd Street Project, set up Scene & Heard in 1999. Prior to this Sophie worked as an actress, director and for a literary agent, while Kate was a theatre in education practitioner. Their combined and varied experiences of theatre, new writing, education and young people during those years came to fruition with the creation of Scene & Heard.
Kate stepped down as Co-Director of the charity in 2009, while Sophie remained in post until 2010. Kate is currently working with the award winning conservation biologist Dr. Susanna Paisley on the social enterprise Survival Arts (http://www.survival-arts.org/) She is married to the actor and Scene & Heard volunteer Ghiv (Paul) Chahidi and has one son. Sophie is currently taking some time to write whilst raising her two sons and is married to sustainability expert and former Scene & Heard volunteer Mark Gough.
